When boredom hits, I open a “tiny doodle menu” 🫶

Sometimes I’m not even “in the mood to draw”… I’m just stuck. Like, pencil in hand, blank page judging me, brain buffering. So I started keeping a little list of stuff to sketch when bored—quick, cute, low-pressure ideas that don’t require talent, a plan, or a perfect sketchbook.

This is very much that vibe: tiny doodles for class, late-night sketchbook scribbles, coquette-core details, sea animals, hearts with faces (yes), drippy candles, spider webs, and the classic “why did I draw this combo” fruit snack moment. I used to waste more time setting up than drawing. Now I do this:

When I can’t choose one thing, I do a whole ocean corner: tiny fish, a baby shark shape, a shell, a starfish, a little wave line, maybe a cute swan if I’m feeling soft and floaty.

Easy trick: keep everything made of simple shapes. Ovals for fish, triangles for fins, dots for bubbles. Add a few stars and flowers around it if you want that dreamy “notes margin doodles” look.

3) Silly cats… and then more silly cats

I don’t know why, but drawing cats fixes boredom like nothing else. The best part is cats can be ugly-cute and still work.

Three cat prompts that never fail:

Cat #1: Just a circle head, tiny ears, and a dramatic grumpy mouth.

Cat #2: Long noodle body with tiny legs (the “what is anatomy” cat).

Cat #3: A cat loaf with a bow. Add whiskers that are way too long. Give it a little attitude.

If you want to level up, draw “another cat” beside it with the opposite expression. One looks innocent, the other looks like it knows secrets.

4) Hearts, but make them weird (in a cute way)

Regular hearts are fine… but bored hearts need personality.

Ideas:

A heart with a face (tiny eyes + blush). A heart spider (heart body + eight stick legs). A heart with a bandaid. A heart that’s melting like drippy wax. A heart with XOXO scribbled around it. These are fast, graphic, and super satisfying to fill a page with.

5) Spider web corner (for instant “sketchbook aesthetic”)

Spider webs are one of those doodles that look intentional even if you’re half-asleep. Start with a corner triangle web, add curved lines, then connect them. If you mess up, it still looks like a web. That’s the magic.

Extra cute add-ons: a tiny hanging heart, a little sparkle, or a mini spider that looks more like a dot with legs (no pressure).

6) Drippy candles (the most relaxing repetitive doodle)

Draw a simple candle shape, then let the wax drip in slow lines. Add a flame. Add more candles. Put them on a tiny plate. Add stars around them. This is one of my favorite “easy doodles for when you’re bored” because it’s repetitive in a calming way, like your hand is doing the thinking for you.

Texture idea: shade the candle with soft side-to-side pencil strokes, then outline the drips darker.

7) Eyes (cute, dramatic, or sleepy)

Eyes are a whole hobby on their own. If boredom is making you restless, eyes help because there are a lot of tiny parts to focus on.

Mini prompts:

Draw three eyes: one sleepy, one surprised, one “side-eye.” Add sparkles in the pupil. Add a heart highlight. Or do a super simple closed eye with thick lashes and a tiny under-eye line. Even one eye in the corner of your page can make it feel like you “did something.”

8) Flowers + roses + little leaves (the classic for a reason)

Flowers are the ultimate filler doodle. A simple five-petal flower, a rose spiral, a few leaves—suddenly your page looks alive.

My boredom flower recipe:

One big flower, two tiny ones, three leaves, and a few dots around them. If you want a softer look, keep the outlines light and shade the center. If you want a bolder look, outline darker and add crosshatching in the petals.

9) Butterflies (simple outline, big payoff)

Butterflies are great when you want symmetry but not perfection. Draw a skinny body, two wings, then decorate with dots and little shapes. If one wing is slightly off, it still reads as butterfly. Promise.

Make it extra: put a mini playlist title on the label (just words, no need to be specific), or add sparkles and stars around it for that dreamy sketchbook look.

14) Puppy doodle (tiny nose = instant serotonin)

Puppies are like cats but softer. Start with a rounded head, floppy ears, dot eyes, and a bigger nose. Keep it cartoon-simple. If you’re bored, you don’t need realism—you need a quick win.

Easy variations: puppy with a bow, puppy with a little tongue sticking out, puppy peeking from a pocket, puppy with a tiny heart next to it.

15) “Tiny doodles for class” layout: the page that looks full fast

If you’re bored in class (or in any place where you need to look busy), do this layout:

Step 1: Pick 6 mini icons: jellyfish, star, flower, eye, cat, candle.

Step 2: Repeat them across the page in different sizes.

Step 3: Add filler: dots, sparkles, tiny XOXO, little lines.

This makes your sketchbook page look intentional without needing one “big drawing.” It’s also amazing for beginners because you’re practicing shapes over and over.

If your sketches feel flat, these are my favorite quick upgrades:

Outline + one shadow: pick one side (usually bottom-right) and add a small shadow line.

Add a highlight: leave one tiny white spot or draw a little shine line on fruit, eyes, records, even candles.

Background fillers: dots, stars, tiny flowers, little X marks. It’s the easiest way to make a page feel styled.

18) If you’re truly stuck: copy-friendly prompts (no shame, only vibes)

Sometimes the best way to start is to copy a simple idea and then change one thing. Here are copy-friendly prompts you can recreate in seconds:

A cute swan with a tiny crown.

A rose with two leaves and a ribbon.

A butterfly with dotted wing patterns.

A coquette corset with lace X’s.

A jellyfish with a heart highlight.

19) My personal “bored but still want to draw” rule
